How to Store CTP-S Thermal Plates Correctly Temperature, humidity, and shelf life
Store CTP-S plates at 15–27°C, with relative humidity below 65% — ideally 50–60%. Some manufacturers recommend a tighter band of 20–25°C, with daily variation no more than ±2°C. Fluctuations are the real enemy: they cause the photosensitive coating to deteriorate and can lead to oxidation of the aluminium base.
Keep plates away from exterior walls, water tanks, chemical storage, and direct sunlight. If your climate swings hard between seasons, use a dehumidifier or a small climate-controlled cabinet. The cost is small compared to a ruined plate lot.
Keep plates in their original packaging until ready to image. The interleaf paper and moisture barrier are part of the protection system.
The 12-month shelf life starts from the manufacturing date, not the delivery date. If you buy through a distributor, ask for the production date.
Use FIFO (first-in, first-out) rotation so older batches get used first. This simple discipline prevents old stock from sitting on the shelf past its prime.
💡 Pro Tip: Label each plate box with its production date when it arrives. Train warehouse staff to pick the oldest batch first — every time.
Controlled storage is the cheapest insurance you can buy for plate life. A small investment in climate control, proper stacking, and FIFO discipline can mean the difference between a plate that runs perfectly for 100,000 impressions — and one that fails at 20,000.
